Marie Anchordoguy,"SHORT SUMMARY OF COURSE: An Introduction to the Political Economy and International Relations of Northeast Asia in the Postwar Period"

The goal of this short intensive course is to provide students with the basic tools needed to analyze the major political and economic developments in the political economy and international relations of Northeast Asia. The course will briefly cover the major theories and concepts commonly used by political scientists and economists to analyze political economy issues; will explore the main concepts used to explain Japan's rapid economic growth in the postwar period; and analyze the key institutions--political, financial, and corporate--that help determine how Japan's political economy works. It then uses Japan as a model against which to compare the industrial development of South Korea, Taiwan, and China. The course will also examine the general trends and challenges in U.S.-Japan Relations and Japan-China Relations in the period since 1945.
