About Our Program

Our globalizing world needs talented new women in leadership with practical skills and the capacity to empathize with others.
Global Studies for Inter-cultural Cooperation (GICC) is a program that provides the necessary knowledge and skills for such leaders:

  • Comprehension of various regions and cultures;
  • Communication with people from different cultures;
  • Collaboration across borders and cultures.

These keywords are the three C’s essential in our globalizing modern era.
Students, affiliated with either Liberal Arts and Humanities Department, Languages and Culture Department, or Human and Social Sciences Department of the Faculty of Letters and Education, can choose the GICC as their primary program.

GICC Curriculum

The GICC offers fresh and inspiring classes. As well as specialized courses in the three interrelated themes of Area/Regional Culture Studies, Cross-Cultural Communication and Coexistence, and International Relations and Cooperation, there are also Basic Courses classes covering areas such as global media and international relations, Research Methodology classes in which students learn how to carry out research, and Field Studies involving actual travel to domestic and overseas locations to experience and consider international exchange and cooperation. We anticipate that the Graduation Research—in which a student give shape to four years of work through discussion with faculty members—will be more than a dissertation, bringing together fieldwork outcomes and reports and putting the student’s individuality on display. Our ambition is to train graduates who go on to participate in international exchange and cooperation in a range of fields, such as working with international organizations, NGOs, and private companies, in the mass media, or as civil servants, teachers, or Japanese language instructors.

Area/Regional Culture Studies

Keyword: Comprehension

How do we go about understanding local societies and cultures that are being transformed by globalization? Students learn how to approach this issue in Area/Regional Culture Studies. Successful interactions with people from various backgrounds demand a profound understanding of their society and culture. The impact of globalization, and responses to it, will differ from, for example, Africa to Oceania. Where do these differences come from? The aim is an immersive form of comprehension that incorporates language and worldview.

Cross-Cultural Communication and Coexistence

Keyword: Communication

How should people from different cultures interact and communicate with one another? In Cross-Cultural Communication and Coexistence, students learn theories and methodologies relating to this issue. Contact and interactions with people from different cultures and speaking different languages is becoming commonplace not only overseas but even in Japan. We take a psychological and linguistic approach to communication methods, and the changes to personal behavior and impact on intercultural understanding brought about by diverse forms of contact such as with food, clothing, and media.

International Relations and Cooperation

Keyword: Communication

International relations today are in a state of dramatic transformation. This is no longer the domain solely of inter-state diplomacy and war, with diverse actors such as international organizations, international NGOs, multinational corporations, and even various individuals now actively playing a role. Building a peaceful and prosperous world is a project that cannot be realized without the contribution of a variety of people across a range of settings. That being the case, it is becoming more and more essential to promote international cooperation through dialogue and mutual learning with those in different positions to ourselves. This is predicated on a sufficient comprehension of the differences between one other’s values and cultures.
