講義概要
15世紀イギリスの手紙史料を用いて、一通の手紙から何がわかり、また何がわからないのかを考えたり、手紙の書式からいえることを検討しました。当時、羊皮紙や紙は大変高価で貴重だったために、手紙は細かな字でびっしりと書かれ、あまった部分は切り取って再利用するなど、ちびちびと使われていたのですが、手紙の文面はといえば、時候の挨拶のような文章が多いときには手紙の半分を占めるものもありました。もったいないなあ、なんでながながと挨拶文を書くのだろう、はぶいてしまえばいいのにという疑問を持ったことがそもそもの始まりです。そのうちに、貴重な紙を使ってわざわざ長い 挨拶文を書かなければいけないような理由が当時あったのではないか、それを探ってみようと考えるようになりました。書簡史料とコミュニケーションをテーマにシンポジウムも行いましたが、その成果を講義に活かしたいと思っています。
また、贖宥状（個人宛の手紙の形式を持つ免罪符です）について話をしました。ルターによる批判で悪名高い免罪符ですが、単なる一回の売買では片づけられない関係が、中世にはありました。その多くは、祈祷兄弟盟約といって、与えた人（その多くは宗教団体です）ともらった人がお友達関係になって、もらった人を与えた人の宗教団体がいわば名誉会員として受け入れることが明記されていたのです。さらに免罪符をもらった側の立場にたって考えてみると、宗教だけでは割り切れない理由も見えてきます。贖宥状をもらった人と与えた人が、その時どのような社会的関係にあったのかを明らかにすることで、いろいろと見えてくるのではないかと考えています。
贖宥状をひとりで10通もため込んだ女性がいます。キャサリン・ラングレィというロンドン豪商出身でジェントリに嫁ぎ未亡人になった女性です。ここ数年、この女性とラングレィ家に関する史料を集めて、ぼちぼち読み始めています。最初に、彼女の遺言書を3・4年生と一緒に読みました。またラングレィ家の家政会計記録を読んでいます。マニュスクリプトを前にして一緒ににらめっこしつつ読んでいくと、肉食が禁じられた四旬節にはカキやムール貝やヒラメでタンパク質を取り、四旬節が終わって、ただ同然になった貝類や値崩れした棒ダラ等を買いあさり安いときに買いだめするなど、生活のありさまが手に取るように浮かんできて興味深いものです。家政会計記録は一応読み終わったので、授業の中ではキャサリンとロンドンとの関係を今後は探っていきたいと思っています。
またイギリスで制作された最近の歴史関係DVDが非常に詳しくてまた興味深いので、それらを解説しつつ授業で見ています。
ゼミ概要
ここ数年は、英語で書かれた最近の雑誌英語論文を、一年に7～8本、担当者による発表形式で読んでいます。各自が分担して、要約・コメントし、それをうけて 皆で議論するというやり方です。テーマがあちこちに飛びますが、研究の新しい波にふれる充実感が味わえます。最近の論文のテーマは、
