Research Areas

Iranian History; Family History; Middle Eastern Studies; Cultural History

Education and Research Profile

My research is concerned predominantly with familial relationships in historical contexts, an area that has been somewhat overlooked in Middle Eastern Studies. My focus hitherto has been on how Islamic law and relationships between family members have related to the conservation of family property, with a focus on the role played by women in that area. By closely reading historical materials of various types, such as Islamic legal documents and private letters, and skillfully locating discrepancies in consideration of their backgrounds, it is possible to bring vivid human relationships and highly calculated bargaining to the surface. This is arduous but extremely rewarding work.

Recently, I have been researching marriage systems based on Islamic law in 19th century Iran, as well as marriage practices without a direct connection to Islamic law, with reference to both historical records and materials such as law books, police reports, and official bulletins. During my research I am always conscious of differences and similarities between family and marriage systems across the Arab world, Turkey, and Central Asia, as well as Japan, Europe, India, China, and so on. I am also looking at areas such as Islamic law and judicial systems, mausoleums and the conservation of property, power and literature, and minority Armenian Christians

Most of the classes I am responsible for are run jointly with the Comparative History course, and my intention is to properly combine an understanding of the globally connected world with an appropriate positioning within the historical context.

In our classes, we will approach commonly accepted theory with skepticism (of course), and think about how knowledge that’s somehow worked its way into our thinking can be extremely problematic. This is true not only for issues connected to Islam and the Middle East but also for our own immediate surroundings.
