Education and Research Profile

I arrived in Japan as an international student and shortly thereafter, I interned at an NPO that supports children with foreign roots. There, I had the opportunity to meet passionate education supporters and high school teachers in Osaka. I was captivated by their burning desire to help the students in front of them and decided to become an educational supporter, interpreting the lesson content for students with foreign roots. Attracted by the joys and challenges of the education field, I conducted field research mainly in Osaka, as well as in California, USA, and London, UK, at public high schools where students with foreign roots were enrolled. Approaching the students with foreign roots, I sought to understand their experiences in school. Through this exploration, I have examined the realities of their intercultural communication and the challenges they faced, while searching for the ideal multicultural coexistence.

Sociologist Ikuya Sato points out the importance of not just scouring the library for books when conducting research, but seeing things with your own eyes, and uses the phrase, "Take a book and go to town”. With this philosophy in my mind, I have had the opportunity to visit various sites such as disaster-stricken areas and immigrant communities, as well as educational institutions. Through these experiences, I have been fortunate to engage in dialogue with people from different backgrounds. Based on this experience, in my courses that relate to the theme of "multicultural coexistence," I strive to create opportunities for understanding the perspectives of not only “foreigners,” but also individuals with disabilities, those from Buraku communities, sexual minorities, and other marginalized groups who find themselves in socially vulnerable positions, both within Japan and overseas. Together, we explore the social issues they face and consider the essence of intercultural communication. Would you like to join me in this journey of exploring the stimulation and fascination that comes with encountering different cultures?
