Education and Research Profile

My dream of becoming an international civil servant in the future led me, fortuitously, to Sāmoa—an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean—after studying Development Studies in the United Kingdom. I investigated the background of women who were brought together for a sewing program run by Japanese women who had been dispatched to the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development in Sāmoa. Unlike other developing regions, however, Sāmoa is not a place where one observes the problem of extreme poverty, and the social status of women is relatively high; in a sense this was a curious country, making one think about what kind of international cooperation is needed. Sāmoan society is supported by a unique social system and a body of migrants living overseas that outnumbers the domestic population. I continued to research the region, with an interest in the impact of globalization on Sāmoan society, and the role that the migration of Sāmoans, in particular Sāmoan women, plays in the development of their home nation, communities, and families.

Interactive learning is a common focus in all of the courses I teach. My view is that, in the chaotic global society of the future, what we need is not a single correct answer but rather the ability to identify problems through dialogue and study, and the drive to go on to find concrete solutions to those problems. In both lectures and exercises, I want to cultivate the capacity for collaborative thinking about the issues faced by the modern world and Japan, starting from various social and cultural phenomena relating to globalization, and the ability to tackle each of those problems in an appropriate manner.
