Education and Research Profile
Having spent three years as an Overseas Cooperation Volunteer for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (rural development) in Zambia, Africa, I have been involved in African “development” from both practical and area studies perspectives. Tanzania has come to be my primary field of research since my participation as a JICA technical expert to the Sokoine University of Agriculture, Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SCSRD) Project (1999–2004), and I continue to monitor changes in the project area and people-initiated schemes with annual visits to the country. Through fieldwork in Africa, I explore ideal structures for sustainable societies that make the most of local potential, and for cross-border collaboration and coexistence. Themes of particular interest include endogenous development, sustainable development, poverty and economic disparity, community organizations and issues on environment, food, water, and energy.
In the International Cooperation courses that I teach, we take an overview of the focus in recent years on SDGs, how the conceptual basis for SDGs took shape in the transition of development theory and policy in the 1960s, and the process of moving from MDGs to SDGs. Based on the overview, we aim to learn about the current situation and issues such as the impact of COVID-19 from multiple perspectives, with a critical viewpoint all the while. Course exercises have a focus on presentations and discussion, as we strive to create a space where students can learn from each other and about areas and perspectives that may have escaped their notice or in which they may not have had an interest, while delving further into their own respective themes of research. I would like us all to think together about how we can best coexist in this age of globalization, while unravelling the connection between our own lives and other regions and countries.
